Römertopf vs Dutch Oven Battle

Posted on May 30, 2023May 24, 2023 by AEC Heather

What a fantastic adventure we have today! I’ve wondered what the difference is, now I can tell you! Which one does it better? This is the Römertopf vs Dutch Oven battle! Thank you Rico46209 for asking the difference between how the Romertopf performs verses the Dutch Oven.

White Artisan Sandwich Bread

(Makes 2)

Ingredients:

  • 5 cups All Purpose Flour (540g)
  • 1 Tablespoon of sugar or honey
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons instant yeast
  • 2 ½ teaspoons salt (15g)
  • 1 ⅔ cups warm water (380g)

Directions:

  1. Add all your dry ingredients to the bowl of your stand mixer fitted with the dough hook.
  2. Start mixer on low and mix until thoroughly combined.
  3. Turn the mixer to medium and add your warm 110F water into the center of your mixer a little at a time watching for full incorporation before moving on. Once all the liquid has been mixed in, increase the spread of the mixer to medium-high and knead for 5-7 minutes or until the dough pulls into a soft elastic ball. Place the dough ball in a well oiled bowl and cover and let rise in a warm area for 2 hours.
  4. Pour dough onto the counter and divide it in half. Spread the edges of your dough out as far as you can pull and stretch without tearing, then roll the dough up starting with the short side. Pinch the ends to remove any “belly buttons”.
  5. Place in a well floured bannaton or place directly in a well oiled loaf tin. Cover with plastic wrap and allow the dough to rise one last time for About an hour.
  6. Bake at 450F in a covered Dutch oven for 40 minutes, then remove the cover and bake an additional 15-20 minutes or until golden brown to your liking.

I just found you this morning. I swear, we are so much alike right down to limiting the coffee I drink (suggestion from my doctor). We live only 5-min away from our favorite grocery & bakery – why should I bother to learn how to bake bread? Then, my ‘prepper’ husband suggested that ‘we’ learn to bake bread. WHAAT?! I hate the mess. Yeah. You get it. He had to start off frist. Fast forward to 2024, I’m pretty good at bread but I need that baker’s blade. Thank you so much for that 1st day video (4 yr. ago) when you received your 1st Romertopf! I can hardly wait! Bless you, sister from another mother. I love you.

Thank you for posting this adventure. I received my first Römertopf for Christmas and am roaming the internet looking for ideas and instructions! I also bake my own bread (albeit gluten free) so this adventure was perfect for me! I notice your written recipe only provides the baking instructions for the Dutch oven, though. Would you kindly add those for the Römertopf? My oven takes a while to warm up, and since the Römertopf goes in cold, I can’t imagine the bread being ready in the same amount of time as with the preheated Dutch oven. Thank you very much in advance!
